How to become a Steward

To become a MNZ Steward you must be familiar with the Rules & Regulations of Motorcycle Competition; these rules are available on the website or by contacting the MNZ office.

MNZ Stewards are graded into four different levels;

  • Level 1
  • Level 2
  • Level 3 Off Road*
  • Level 3 On Road*
  • Level 4 Off Road*
  • Level 4 On Road*

*You may choose to specialise in on Road or Off Road, or you may choose to do both sections of the sport.

To become a level one steward you must firstly pass a test paper; and be available to assist Steward's at Club Days. It is our recommendation that you do not start stewarding on your own until assisting a higher grade steward for at least two club days - this will help you to be familiar with incidents that may take place during a race event (including Trail Rides).

You can find the test paper on our website. This is an open book test, to ensure we know that you are familiar with finding your way around the Manual of Motorcycle Sport. This paper can be completed at your leisure and then sent to the MNZ Office for assesment.

Once you have sent this to the office, your club must also nominate you as a club steward - as all MNZ stewards are club nominated.

To find out how to move through the grades os stewarding refer to the section entitled Grading Papers on the website.
