Changes for Moto Trials in 2012
I congratulate all who have helped Bob Cooke and I through the rule rewrite. It has been a pleasant and positive experience. There will be those who will notice that their input has been heeded and those who will notice the opposite. I thank you all for very constructive feedback. Much deliberation was given before the final draft and I intend to ‘fine tune’ as needed.
Vertical Class System [VCS] is almost a certainty in the rule book for 2012 and will pertain to the Junior and Women classes only. While there is some definite advantages in implementing this system there will also be some administration implications that you all need to be aware of. I would like you to read and understand the rule at
www.mnz.co.nz and then come to grips with the following:
It is not our intention to run a ‘Women’s’ class [VCS] at either N.I or S.I champs but to do so at NZ champs even though we will probably have less than 6 women
It is our intention to run the ‘Junior’ class [VCS] at all championship Trials in 2012 and clubs will need to know the following:
- Junior rider’s age and birthday
ALL male and female riders under who are under 17 at the end of the event or series must be entered as ‘Junior’ [a woman who is under 17 qualifies as both a ‘Junior’ and a ‘Women’] Should a rider turn 17 during a series, it is recommended that they enter a senior class at the beginning of the series.
A ‘Junior’ must nominate which ‘line’ they are to ride before each event and provide appropriately coloured name board. They must ride the entire event in this ‘line’. For definition of an event see rule 30.14.1
A ‘Junior’ is able to gain points in any other class that they qualify for e.g. ‘Clubman, Intermediate, A grade and Expert. It could also include ‘Twin shock’ [on older bike] and ‘Woman [if female] [This will not include the President class. That is, they may ride the ‘green’ line as part of their ‘Junior’ competition but may take no part in the ‘President’ competition as they are not over 40yrs]
By now there are probably some reservations around introducing VCS and I am sure that it is neither as simple as the ‘old system’ nor as complicated as what I have portrayed above. I have simply tried to put as many consequences in front of you as I could to avoid surprises ‘on the day. You now know that a 16 year old girl [if she was really, really, really good] could arrive at NZ champs and win Expert, Junior and Women classes at the same event. It is unlikely but the rules would allow it.
There are other rule changes or modifications that will have lesser implications on our sport and I urge you to read the rule book before 2012. I especially urge you to read the first 10 chapters which outline how we conduct meetings and ourselves. It is fair to say that these are the pages little read by our members yet where we often run so far ‘away from the rules’ For example, Permits must be applied for 90 days before championship event. One that is often not adhered to and is sometimes where the ‘rot’ starts because of short ‘lead in times’
One rule that will have a small impact is the change of penalty in ‘did not attempt’ a section. It will now be only 5pts lost and this can be “noted” at ‘control centre’. I will warn riders here that there are implications of the difference between leaving your card blank for 5s [as opposed to the 10s you used to get] you could be leaving yourself vulnerable for a DNF which will occur when you do not attempt more than 20% of the sections. I amended this rule so that riders did not have to queue to take 5s but they will have to be cautious. At a 36 section trial they will have to attempt 29 sections and at a 40 section trial they need 32 to avoid a DNF. Also if you do not attempt a section because of a queue you have made that decision. You cannot ride past it and come back to it later. [Riding out of sequence].
I have had some requests from riders who are over 17yrs and under 40yrs old wanting to ride the ‘Green’ line. At this stage it is a championship class and the only allowance [as per rule book] is for riders who are 40yrs+ to be in this grade. However it is also in the rules that those wanting to ride outside of their ‘appropriate’ grade are to ask for permission from host club and ride without taking championship points or host club trophies. I and my fellow grading committee are perfectly happy for riders to be contesting the ‘green’ line without their score “counting” toward points or trophies. Some will ask why. I will suggest why not. If it fosters progression it cannot be bad. We have given permission for this to happen.
There is more but at this stage I will invite questions.
